Hello all, new and had a few questions.

I am from Michigan, and wanted to know a good website to find, sorry if I get this wrong, but tabs for a Feadog D whistle. Second question is is there any place I can and get someone to change a youtube video into tabs so I can learn a song. Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but this is the most fitting forum area I could find to post this. Thanks in advance and I cannot wait to hear back from you guys.

Welcome to C&F.

Tabs, at least as you would find for say a guitar, are not all that common for whistle. There probably are sites that use whistle tab but I’m not up on where they may be. What you will find most commonly is music written in abc format, just as useful as tabs, if not more. Two of the more useful sites are the Session and JC’s tune finder.

You might mean a “tune” versus a song. We sing the songs and play the tunes. That aside, it would help if you could give us a link to the YouTube video. If it is a common tune, we probably can point you in the right direction.

Welcome.

Feadoggie

I wish I could remember the difference between a tune and song. Welcome.

How did you come to be in possession of this Feadog and what do you plan on doing with it?

Show up at the Original Dulcimer Players Funfest at Evart Michigan (see www.dulcimers.com for details. There are whistle workshops there and probably you’ll get the answers you are looking for.

The song/tune I am talking about is http://youtu.be/iMs_WffLI2k
I am looking for the opening part where he is actually playing the whistle.

I bought it on eBay, and plan to learn to play it,

I don’t want to discourage you, but that bit he’s playing isn’t easy. It’s certainly not something a beginner is going to tackle with much success. Like any other instrument, the whistle takes time to learn to play well …years, in fact. Good luck though.

Yeah, that’s neither a song nor a tune. It’s just an short instrumental intro/break that they probably created for the arrangement.

That will give you the sheet music and/or MIDI.

Yeah I know it isn’t easy, but for future reference when I start getting better. Just want to be prepared for the future. Wasn’t sure if it was going to take a while to find the sheet music for it or what. But MTGuru came through with flying colors.

Thanks, I am going to save that and keep it for future reference.

Hi,

If you are looking for Tabs/tablature or fingering diagram, I suggest you go to

http://praisewhistlers.org/whistleandsqueak/Home.html.

Go to the right side of the page and then click folk, trad, classical.

Click the hyperlink of the song. It comes with Midi and Score with whistle tabs.

One technique I advise you is not to look at whistle tabs. There are about 14-keys diatonic + flattened 7th+ A flat key +Bb key (assuming D whistle) that you need to remember. If you focus on the tabs, you will most likely forget about the breath control.

Read the Score and then listen to the Midi. Read then listen.

I use combine technique for studying new music. By eyes then by ear…then the heart will follow.

Read by eyes to give you accuracy, so you’ll not guess the notes that will be next, then hear the midi, to feel the beat. Listening also helps you determine what ornaments that you need to use, as ornaments is not usually displayed in a score or a tab.

Good Luck

Where are you located in Michigan? The Detroit Irish Musicians Association has teachers, and both I and my fiancee teach whistle (I’d point you in her direction to start, she’s been teaching whistle and fiddle for years).

Best thing to do is to get a teacher.

I am in Linden, so it is a bit of a drive to Detroit, talking about a hour or two drive to there, depending on traffic and construction. Then right now my only time I have available to be able to make a trip like that is the weekends because with Classes and Work, I have very little free time to travel. Most my free time is spent at home, which is why I decided to pick up the Whistle. But if it is a weekend affair then I can do it, depending on if I have any prior plans that weekend.

That link is now saved in my favorites, thank you for your help.

Too bad you didn’t know about it, but we just played at Blackthorne pub in Holly. We’re in Ferndale, so it’s a little closer down I-75.

There is a concert on July 25th in Ann Arbor and another on Aug 10th in Corktown in Detroit that would be worth going to if you can. PM for more details. I had a teacher when I was starting, and I’m firmly convinced having a teacher helps immensely.

As much as I would love to make it, I won’t be able to. I have class that day in the morning and work at night.
