Hector the Hero

Hi,
Does anyone know what/who this tune is about?
Is it a song?
just curious…
thanks. -brett

Answered my own question…

The title of this tune refers to Major-General Hector MacDonald who was born in 1857 in the Black Isle - north of Inverness. MacDonald had a distinguished career in the British army - starting off as an enlisted soldier and rising through the ranks.

Tragically MacDonald was to commit suicide in 1903 after accusations that he was a homosexual - this being the sort of thing which didn’t do a military man’s reputation much good.

To which you can add that the Lament was composed by J.Scott Skinner and published in his Scottish Violinist with the words:

O wail for the mighty in battle
Loud lift ye the coronach strain
For Hector, the hero, of deathless fame
Will never come back again

There’s a substantial site devoted to Hector MacDonald at:
