I’ve been listening to the old-time 78s available at http://www.honkingduck.com/ - and recording them as I do, the site has 701 78s for you to hear so this is a bit of an undertaking but I’m quite the undertaker!
Off and on you hear something that might remind you of an Irish tune but this one is a dead ringer for it. Go to http://www.honkingduck.com/BAZ/baz_one.php?req=ARTIST&pg=5&auid=1149&tuid=274&cuid=20351B , you need Real Player or the equivalent to hear this. The title on the record was “Turkey In The Straw (Paul Jones)”, by Fiddlin’ Joe; the Dublin Reel comes after the Turkey, the record is cut short, unfortunately. No, they’re not calling it Paul Jones here, apparently Paul Jones is something the caller (who calls the steps etc.) shouts at a strategic point. The caller on this record sounds quite tosh, too.
That is a great website. I listened to some Sacred Harp music—“Rocky Road” and “On the Sea of Life” were great. Also, Uncle Dave Macon and Charlie Poole----people I’ve heard of, but never heard. My funniest one was “Soldier’s Joy” done by the North Carolina Hawaiians (I think)----not perhaps the best rendition, but to each his own!
(pssst—What does “tosh” mean? I think maybe it is his accent, but I haven’t heard the word before.)
“Paul Jones” is the name of the dance. I was recently given some LPs of French-Canadian dance bands from the 1960s (which I must admit I haven’t managed to find time to listen to yet but the photos of the bands in their stage gear are wonderful). If I remember right one entire side of one of the records is taken up with a marathon medley of tunes for a “Paul Jones”.
PS where I come from, “tosh” means “nonsense” but I think you must be mishearing something…

I think that Kevin,in his original post,made a wee typo and tosh - which over here means rubbish - should be read as posh.

Well, dang, you could’ve fooled me. I thought it was some ITM terminology----bein’ a beginner and all.
I find sometimes when I’m typing that two words try to come out at the same time. Perhaps KLR had a similar occasion and mixed posh and toff (?).
