I have a ebony 3pc dixon with a unlined headjoint, I would like to have a fully lined
sliding headjoint made for it. I have’nt yet
asked any of the makers if and how much it could be done for. could anyone perhaps give
me some ballpark expectations.
Hi James:
You will pay in the ballpark of $4-700 for a good silver lined headjoint. I think Olwell would charge you about $5-500 and my Wilkes headjoint, bought by the previous owner, was around $700, I think.
Try Peter Noy, he makes some nice headjoints and the waiting time is not long.
Another option: currently Hammy Hamilton’s keyless flutes with tuning slide are just about $570, which would give you a top-notch performance-grade flute from one of the most respected makers.
This might actually be cheaper than seeking a replacement headjoint and barrel for your current flute, and from what I’ve read about Hammy’s flutes, I don’t think you’d go wrong with one.
Best wishes,
–James
