Has anyone seen "Buille?"

Buille is a group consisting of Niall Vallely, Paul Meehan and Caoimhín Vallely. Probably not strictly ITM, but there should be some good tunes. They’re performing locally on Sunday. I’ll definitely be going–just wondered if anyone else had seen them.

I suppose you’ve got an idea of what you mean by strictly ITM, Susan, but if it is wider than pure drop, they’d mostly be in it. Caoimhín is a quite brilliant piano player, and Niall’s concertina playing is jaw dropping in its virtuosity - he does things (I’m particularly thinking bellows ornaments and such) that I don’t think any other concertina player does. They’re also very good lads. (I was in school with Caoimhín at one point). Well worth going, esp. if top notch trad is not very frequently available, I’ve seen them in this formation a couple of times, and they’re great.

I’ve got Niall/Cillian Vallely’s CD (Caoimhin plays a bit on that too) and love it, although I don’t consider them “pure drop.” Fine by me–I think it’ll be great music and lots of fun. (Top notch trad is almost never available here.)

This was a fun outing. It was part of the Living Traditions Festival where there are dancers, music, food, crafts from all around the world, so it wasn’t like a concert–lots of people roaming around. Donal Clancy was filling in for Paul Meehan. The announcer said they gave a workshop during the festival, but I don’t know what kind…concertina? guitar? Anyway, it was fun to hear them play.

I saw Buille at the Saturday night show and they did not disappoint. Apart from the unusual pairing of piano, guitar and concertina I thought that they really stuck with very trad tunes for the most part. Sure they did a few modern compositions, but it was all in a traditional flavor, with a lot of energetic playing! A lot of foks were having a great time dancing too.

I have to agree Susan that top notch trad shows are more infrequent in Utah than you would expect. You have to figure that a lot of acts touring the west are very likely to pass through Salt Lake and not stop and play a show. It was not always this way.

But there are still opportunities, and great ones at that. Every June for the last four years we at the Salt Lake Uilleann Pipers club have hosted some great performers. David Power, Seth Gallagher, Tommy Martin, and this year Kieran O’Hare (pipes) and Liz Knowles (fiddle). In the past, the weekend events have gone way beyond just your typical concert performance. There is ample opportunity to meet these folks in person, take work shops and play some tunes. David Power played the pipes in my kitchen until 4 am for a whole bunch of people last time he was in town. This year will be no exception. Check our web site for further details, www.uilleann.org. We will be updating the information this week with more details about the concert, work shops and house party. Spread the news and I hope to see you there!

A couple of years ago (2-3?) when Lunasa played in Ogden there were less than 100 people in attendance in a huge theater. Those who were there (apart from a couple) were not a particularly appreciative audience. I would think word of this type of reception gets around in musician circles. (That said, however, when Cherish the Ladies played at the same theater a year later, it was sold out.)
