I posted this on the flute forum, but haven’t gotten any replies yet, so I thought I’d post it here:
Hi,
I’ve never posted on the flute forum before, but I thought some of you might be able to help me. I’m considering learning the piccolo and found one at whistleshop.com. It’s made of Pyrex glass. I was wondering if any of you have ever played this piccolo and if so, does it have a nice tone, is it easy to play? Here’s a link to a picture of it: http://www.thewhistleshop.com/catalog/otherinstruments/flutesfifes/hall/hall.htm
Yes, I’ve played it. It’s not bad, but I found it sought of tempermental. That said, IMHO all piccolos are tempermental. It’s got a darker sound than I normally look for in a piccolo.
It has a nice enough sound, but I prefer the regular Hall flute by miles. Just my $0.02 worth, your mileage may vary.
Sara,
Piccolos in my experience are more difficult than low D flutes because the embouchure must be smaller. I have a Sweet blackwood picc that I continue to work with but get frustrated and keep going back to the whistles. I have a Hall low D that is easier to play than a picc, but it isn’t nearly as easy as the bamboo Olwells I used to have.
