Harper A/G Set

I just took delivery of a Harper A/G set, this is one head with two bodies, all in aluminum.

Lovely instruments to look at, wonderful to play once they warm up. Takes some getting used to “popping” the octaves, takes a lot of control to seemlessly flow from first to second octave. Probably would be a challenge to a new player, but no problem for an intermediate or advanced player.

I’m particularly fond of the G configuration, once the instrument warms up it really sings, plays well in tune, very consistent across both octaves. The A is very similar, requires a bit more control to nail the octave transitions. I love the mellow tone of the G! Both have extremely narrow windways which means you’ve got to get your spit under control lest you find yourself clearing the windway a lot.

I’d highly recommend this pair of instruments!

Interesting. I don’t think I knew Harpers came in those keys. I’ve got a D which was a gift from Thom Larson. It’s really a very nice whistle. It’s in the Overton tradition.

I have the same set. Love the sound and intonation, but they were not very playable until I softened the outside edges of the holes with some fine sandpaper.

Very ‘clogable’ but great colourful sound.

I have two Harper sets I would like to sell. I haven’t really played them that much since getting my Abells and O’Riordans. I have the C/D and the A/G sets and both are engraved and in perfect condition. They are currently listed in Lark in the Morning for $210 for the D/C and $260 for the A/G set. I would sell them both, including a wooden box I made for them, for $250. I will ship.
