I agree…Valentine’s Day is a “holiday” concocted merely to boost the sales of greeting cards and flowers. Notice, however, I did not include chocolate in that. Anytime is a good time for chocolate! But anyway, I’ll bah humbug right along with you, emm.
BUT!!! I’ll definitely send Missy a resounding HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! That is awesome! I’m all about birthdays
(speaking of which, my Katherine’s was yesterday…she turned 18. The child was over 9lbs when she was born, and she was 2 weeks late on top of that. She didn’t see fit to wait until Valentine’s Day apparently. And yes, she’s walked to the beat of her own drum ever since )
No, it’s a holiday in the original sense of holyday. It wasn’t concocted merely to boost the sales of greeting cards and flowers, rather it was misappropriated to that end.
For both of you, here are some quotes stolen from someone else’s “I’m turning 50” birthday thread…It was an excellent thread by the way and cheered the recipient up very much. I hope these have the same effect on you(ns).
Aphorism:
“The surest fountain of youth is to grow old disgracefully.”
Some may say “you’re only as old as you feel” . If that’s true I’m about 70 right now. (yes, you do have to get use to something always hurting)
I say, you’re only as old as you are in your head. (yeah, that may hurt too on occasion, just take some aspirin.)
Fifty is no big deal. I just flat out refuse to be “old”! > >
I’ve always been fond of the saying, “Better over the hill than under it.”
As for me all I can take from it is the apparent news that people twice my age get to have a whole lot more fun than I do >
Growing older is mandatory; growing up is optional.
I might repeat to myself slowly and soothingly, a list of quotations beautiful from minds profound - if I can remember any of the damn things. Dorothy Parker
I have about 6 more months before I hit that milestone…
Sure, the body ain’t quite what it used to be. But, honestly, I think my BEST years are ahead of me! I’m hoping to retire in the next 6 or so years, and then I can devote time to the things I really WANT to do. One kid is out of the house, and hopefully the next won’t be too far behind (contrary to what HE says, he is NOT going to live in my basement, playing video games when he is 35!).
I’m old enough that I don’t give a crap what anyone thinks about me. I’m almost old enough that I can get away with doing whatever I want, too!
I always said my theme song for later in life would be “Little Old Lady from Pasadena”.
Although, honestly, I think “In Spite of Ourselves” might be closer to the truth!!! >
You’re right…sorry about that! I should have been more clear…it’s not the day itself I have a problem with, but what it has become. Kind of like Christmas. I’m not too terribly fond of the commercialism in general.
Happy Valentine’s Day and Birthday to Missy. Be glad you weren’t named “Valentine” in it’s honor like a lady on my mail route who’s celebrating a birthday too. Don’t worry about the number. You really are only as old as you are in your head.
Valentine’s Day has always made me nervous. Every time my husband ever bought me something expensive like roses, etc. something bad then happened. Stuff like job lay-off, etc. He’s learned. Today I got a little plastic heart filled with chocolate. Ya can’t beat chocolate.
