Happy Overshoot Day!

Today 25 September is the day when the whole world has used up the sustainable resources of the year. Of course all our nation’s overshoot day has long since past, was it sometime in April?

Globally, we now require the equivalent of 1.4 planets to support our lifestyles. Put another way, in less than 10 months, humanity will have used ecological services it takes 12 months for the Earth to regenerate.

Apparently the world economic crisis and subsequent recession has done very little to change this day, this year just one day later than last year.

Great site. Thanks for posting that, Hans. I’m surprised this hasn’t made today’s mainstream media, (at least here in the US).

I can’t say as I have ever heard anyone outside of life sciences ever discussing William Catton’s work.

I found it fascinating to look at various nation’s eco-footprint trends on http://www.footprintnetwork.org , there are so many differences, and each graphic should tell a story of the nation’s development.

There is also link to a trendalyzer, which leads you to an interesting interactive graphic. Click the pic, play with the time slider and explore!
