Happy Birthday Pillar Box!

On April 11, 1855
Britain’s first pillar boxes were put up in London. There were just six of them, and they were painted green.

We have more now, maybe as many as seventeen, but the service is no better.

And they’re red now. Letter-posting boxes are green in Ireland, and blue in the USA. If you’re in one of those three countries but you’re not sure which, try to mail a letter, and you’ll figure it out.

Is that were the phrase “from pillar to post” came from?
