hand problems

Did somebody post a site a while ago that dealt with hand problems? I seem to remember it but cant find it in search. I remember that there were pictures of hands that’d had surgery and were gruesome. That’s the only way I remember it.

I’m having an issue with my R1 finger, and I don’t think it’s related to my ulnar neuropathies, which don’t give me problems much anymore.

I can’t bend it straight out without a lot of force, and when it’s straight out, I can feel pressure for it to curl back into the palm of my hand.

It has delayed reaction with typing (I dont use that hand to type anymore), and worse, with whistling.

I obviously can’t afford to see a doctor, or I would.

Yikes, this reminds me of the “trigger finger” thread.

Did you ever break or really jam your finger?
There’s a tendon that runs along the back of your fingers that attaches to the bottom of the uppermost bone of the finger. This tendon helps you straighten your fingers out. If you ever have your fingers outstretched then had something bonk the tips of your fingers (this happened to me a couple of times trying to catch footballs), a little piece of bone where the tendon is attached can break away (finger forced to curl while tendon is trying to keep fingers straight). If you don’t get your finger in the proper kind of brace (one that pushes the finger back a little against the direction of curl), the little piece of bone never re-adheres or adheres to the wrong spot. Now the tendon can’t help you pull your fingers straight or doesn’t do it as well.
But then I’m not a doctor, I just play one on TV…

Thanks glauber. I couldn’t remember the term trigger finger.

I’ve been searching for the last few hours and I found out exactly what I have, it’s called mallet finger.

P.S., I didn’t know they have tv in Montana.

Is the rest of your hand fine? with a bit of practice you might be able to use the bottom 3 fingers (middle, ring, and pinky) instead. Obviously, it’ll take a lot of getting used to, but at least you’ll still be able to play.

I can play like that but…I made a homemade splint in case I don’t get to a doctor, and the splint gets in my way..

This page scares me. http://www.pncl.co.uk/~belcher/Tendon%20injury.html

But really, it is my own fault. shrug

EW, craaaaan! Those pictures make my fingers hurt just looking at them >.<

Don’t look at that page if you don’t like pictures of bloody finger surgery, people…

You need something like “warning: graphic” next to that link.

Thanks for an intresting link Cran. 'course I’m not too bothered by surgery pics(unless their of my family). Due to assisting with many animal surgeries (old burnt out vet tech here) I’ve ceased to be shocked by physical injury as long as it’s not intentionally inflicted to cause harm.

When my wife was in school she had a book about skin diseases. They were disgusting and turned my stomach, but I couldn’t not look at them. I’m pretty sure that means that there’s something very wrong with me. Same with your link Cran… I knew it would be gross (and it did make my stomach jump) but I couldn’t help looking.

Rubber necking is the curse of mankind.

I would’ve said it was graphic but I wasn’t the first person to post it. fancypiper posted it in the “trigger finger” thread that I couldn’t find at first. Sorry, people.

Have you ever considered a “One-Handed” instrument? If your finger is disfunctional you could “free-up” your right hand for drumming with one of these sweet babies…

I have a single-handed (left) Dolmetsch I found at a garage sale for $30 bucks and I use it religiously! It leaves my right hand free to beat my Tambourin a’ chords(string drum). I love it!

You all should see the pics I have to endure during my first aid/CPR training!

Talk about major eeeeeew! :boggle:

A few years ago I have seen a young man who had malformed arms and hands. His arms were very short, they ended where a healthy person’s elbows would be. He played classical music on the Panflute and he was a real virtuoso and a great musician. I saw him playing a concert in a quite renowned chamber music location.

Hello,
I don’t know if this is right for your problem, but this site has real good info and a home treatment plan for reptative strain injuries.

Let me say again…

Pay a visit to a licensed hand therapist. There may be treatments and options you’ve never considered.

Take a look at http://www.silverringsplint.com (“eeewww”-factor = nil) for elegant silver splints that may be covered by your health insurance. Mine were–I have 3 and use them when typing and playing Boehm-style flute. I have them on even now.
