Haiku tribute to John Paul II

John Paul II has died

Fisherman’s shoes will be hard to fill

Who will pastor the world?

The current favourite, with odds of 4-1, is Cardinal Francis Arinze of Nigeria, who has frequently been tipped for the papacy, while Cardinal Dionigi Tettamanzi, the newly-appointed Archbishop of Milan, and Cardinal Giacomo Biffi of Bologna are both quoted at 6-1 by Paddy Power Bookmakers.

As of this morning, however, PP has Arinze and Tettamanzi both at 11-4.

I was going to keep this under my bushel, but this thread seems an appropiate place to share it.

It is amusing and ironic that the melody for this song is an adaptation of “What do we do with a drunken sailor?”

John Paul II

I visited the graves of dead grandparents, heard the news today.
The Pope is dead and gone, his spirit to fly away.
Presidents and ministers to gather in the city of Rome,
And the Catholic cardinals conclave to name one of their own.

Oh, shepherds and saints will sing his praises,
John Paul was his name,
To God goes the glory, but human life is not in vain.
For John Paul had a glow about him, a certainty in his ways…

One is for the Father, Two is for the son,
Three is for the Holy Ghost and the knowledge that we all are one…

Trinity… Humble servant of God
Trinity… Humble servant of God

Oh, shepherds and saints will sing his praises,
John Paul was his name,
His love travels on as ripples in the pond.
His glow continues to shine, up to the heavens beyond.

Trinity… Humble servant of God
Trinity… Humble servant of God

Oh, shepherds and saints will sing his praises,
John Paul was his name…

Actually, that’s a senryuu.

Although they have the same metre, senryuu have a more topical content, and haiku are supposed to contain a seasonal word.

I shall now kneel before you, and you may chastise me with the pedant stick.

Nice words, though.

Mukade

Thanks, but it’s myself kneeling, thanking you for the correction/education.

It’s a good thing they don’t run and American style election to decide.
