The correct phonetic rendering pronunciation of the Cantonese dialect’s New Year’s greeting is “Goong High Faht Choi” I believe.
But that’s like speaking with an unintellible southern accent to most Chinese. If you want to be understood in all parts of China you should use “Guo Yu” (National Official Language) which is basically the dialect spoken around the capital, Beijing (Peking),and is taught in the schools. Phonetically,if memory serves me, this would be:… Goong Si Fah Tsai(“Tsai” rhymes with “sigh”).
I know!!! Picky, Picky! But one has to be careful pronouncing foreign words correctly because otherwise you could be saying something insulting or obscene.
I friend of mine has a Mexican wife who laughed when I mentioned visiting Naco AZ.
When I looked puzzled, she explained that “naco” is a very bad word. She didn’t elucidate, but I have the feeling that it isn’t included in that fat Velasquez Spanish/English dictionary I used in college.

So now it’s Year of the Goat. Used to be Sheep. Hmph. Sheep not good enough, huh? As an Aries, I must register my displeasure at this shiftiness. Actually, the Chinese used to use the same word for both goats and sheep as I recall. Don’t know how it is nowadays. In Japanese there has been an historical distinction but I don’t know how far back that goes. Yagi = goat. Hitsuji = sheep. There WILL be a test. 
As I was born in the Year of the Sheep (OK, Goat), I’m supposed to be inclined to the artistic…which is true. But what about the rest of the talent out there? Hmmm…
Still, I think it’s kinda cool to be an Aries born in the Year of the Sheep. Oh, yeah, Goat, right.

I called my PoPo (grandmother) yesterday to wish her happy new year. She is hard of hearing, and we spent, oh, ten minutes or so with me basically yelling my name at the top of my lungs before she knew who was calling. She then said she was SO happy to have me call her, I’m such a good boy, etc (doesnt matter that I’m 40) and then she spoke in chinese for ten more minutes (Alas, I dont understand chinese) and then she said OK bye bye and hung up. Doesnt really matter that I dont know what she said. Her voice was full of happiness, and we both know that we love each other.
Hmmm,year of the Goat. I’m now dating a Goat, and I’m a Tiger…according to my ancestors I think thats a bad match…hey, they invented gunpowder, pasta, the water clock and movable type, but what the heck to they know?

sorry, been a little preoccupied today with errands and TV/disaster watch.
