standard grip with my upper left hand and pipers’ grip with my right hand on Bb and anything lower (can even barely manage standard grip left on a lowBb). I just couldn’t manage the transition with my left hand, don’t know why.
does anyone else grip their whistles that way too? It’s sorta cool, I remember seeing Mike Katz from the batties gripping his whistles in this manner too.
I use standard grip with all whistles and flutes, never piper’s grip. I guess my fingers stretch pretty far (but if it’s ever impossible, I use my little finger on the last hole). I remember that when I started, even an A whistle was difficult to stretch to finger, but time and practice took care of that. I can’t feel the holes if I don’t use regular grip.
You know, there’s an awful lot to be said
for this Irish traditional
folk music and folklore, because
first of all
you have to learn it
and first you must learn the Talk
and then you must learn the Grip
and after that you must learn the Truckly-How
and then
you have the whole lot
only just to keep on practising it.
Because
Seamus Ennis knows far more about this
than even the old Folk Lordy-Lordy themselves.
Because Seamus Ennis
once met a little Lebrashoneen Truckly-How
at the bottom of the Garden Doth and up the Garden Path
which came up from that,
in the Limeretti-Lumeretti Hillhockers,
before the Earthian Throe,
before the Leprashonerian -
long before the Argay Foray -
and that was in the Deep Pond Doom
before the Emerald Isle was dropped…
I love those “encounter with fairy and became a great musician” stories. Supposedly happened to Michael Coleman on the way home from a long night at the pub. We all need a legend if we can play in a legendary style.
I am generally happy with the progress I have made in the relatively short time I am whistling but i wouldn’t mind a lesson or two with a supernatural little feller…
As for grip, it makes sense Amar, if for nothing else, the half-hole Cnat need with the upper hand. I find myself shifting the lower hand into pipers grip on the bigger whistles then staying there when I return to the D. Relaxes the hand when you have gotten too tense. As long as you are getting the crispness of execution you want, it seems okay to remain fluid.
I don’t think he said RECORDER quite enough times…nyuk.
Nice to see your moniker, Loren! Hey, give us an update of your RECORDER-making exploits (new woods, etc.etc)… I don’t think its a commercial post to do so.
Nope.. but recorder posts from recorder-makers should be clearly labelled as OTR: Of The Recorder
As for the “new” woods, don’t them recorder-makers boil them for hours in corrosive solutions, so it looks like true plastic? All I know is they do so in England, call it in New Labour…
Loren, I’m ok with you making recorders. Don’t pay attention to these brutes, they’re not secure in their manhood, obviously. But the lacy shirts with the puffy sleeves?? Aren’t you overdoing it, my friend?
Tony
Well, I’m pretty much of a liberal, y’know… So, hey the guy makes rexxxxers, wears lacy shirts with the puffy sleeves (don’t fight it, we just had written testimony) and all… I mean, whatever his phantasy, right?
However, this PLUS confessed Bostonian? Like, baroque reXXXXXrs, okay fine.
Now, Bostonian Blurdy Baroque Blockflute Builder may seem over the border.
please, spare the guy, help him out–see, if my daughter told me “Dad, I’m gonna marry a B5”, sure I’d bless her
