Green and white stuff....the solution???

After surgery, I wasn’t so diligent in swabbing the inside of my brass whistles. Now they have this green and white crap in them. And I might be imagining it, but now when I play, I start coughing and I’m wondering if it’s the gunk inside my whistles that is responsible.

Not long ago someone posted a home-made cleanig solution for brass. If that person is reading this, would you mind posting it again?

All other suggestions would be greatly appreciated as well.

The “Green” is copper-oxide or verdegris(vert-de-greece,"green of Greece) and is toxic to animal life. They paint copper oxide on boat bottoms to kill barnacles n such. Brass and Bronze are alloys of Copper. This is probably the stuff that is giving you an allergic reaction. The “White” is either Zinc or Tin oxide and can cause allergic reactions too.

Brush the inside of the tube with a gun bore brush or a piece of 0000 steel wool rolled on a cleaning rod. Once the stuff is gone, wax the inside with soft bees wax, cork wax or similar. This will stop corrosion and also seal the oxides from your windpipes.

Hi, Mike.
Here’s the link: http://chiffboard.mati.ca/viewtopic.php?t=12271 with the first answer to… your similar post.

I’ll correct it, though: do wash the whistle thoroughly with ordinary soap and water. Or Crabtree & Evelyn and Perrier.

Do it fast, though: verdigris already started affecting your memory

Lol Zub

Ahh, now I do remember you posting that. The reason I didn’t recall it was because I was looking for something to remove the film, not the green stuff.

I did get the acetone and it worked.

Now I’ll have to try the solution you gave on the green stuff.

Thanks Zub.
