well, the embouchures on my ABW Flute as well as my ABW Abell Whistle
were getting pretty nasty and I was trying to figure out what I could use to clean them with. Anyhow under the sink we have a spray bottle of a locally made biodegradable product called Charlie’s Soap. On the label it says can be used to clean everything from Falsh Teeth to Diesel Engines.
On the bottle they call it an all purpose cleaner and have a list of things it will clean which is to tedious to mention. However they did not mention ABW Flutes on the bottle, but I figured I would give it a try. I spayed a little on a paper towel, lightly rubbed it across the offending area on the Flute and then swiped it again with the dry part of the paper towel and PRESTO, it was spotless! I don’t know that this product is sold beyond the central area of North Carolina. but if anyone is interested in this product just email me and I’ll be glad to give you their Phone Number

an occasional Q-tip to the flute embouchure…(wet in mouth first…then a dry one)
and an occasional pipe cleaner to the fipple of my whistle…
have always proven sufficient for keeping things clean.
don’t forget to use the Q-tip on the tone holes! fingers leave behind residue and dirt that affect pitch.

I have no idea what Blind Lemon was cleaning with this concoction, we probably don’t want to know!

I’d be wary of using anything that “can be used to clean everything from Falsh Teeth to Diesel Engines”. If it’s abrasive then over time it might do some damage!
That’s exactly what I’m using here. Works for me.
call me a traditionalist, but i let the gunk build up. it adds character!
Is it the gunk or is it the player? Would the same gunk produce the same effect in a Pratten as it would in a Rudall? What kind of gunk is louder? Which gunk will give me a darker tone? 
it is totally the gunk. i spend thousands of dollars every few months buying that new gunk. sometimes i buy antique gunk, just to see which i like better, but i always go back to whichever gunk is more expensive. i would say that the gunk that is recommended by the best player will give you the loudest tone. a rudall gunk will have a more subtle shade and odor, whereas a pratten gunk can offend every one in the bar with it’s poignant odor and piercing tone.
