Great C whistles.... AGAIN!

Hey everybody,

What are some great inexpensive (under $30) C whistles. I have been searching for previous threads on this subject but the search engine doesn’t seem to like “C” as a word. And looking for good, exceptional or great whistles, yields wayyyy to many results.

A few months ago (3-6 maybe?) there was a pretty good thread about this and I seem to remember folks praising Oaks but I could be wrong.

I’d like to get the best bang for the buck here as there is so little played in C proper; it would just be hard to justify the purchase of a high end C. But, of course, I still want it to sound great.

So tell me about your cheap, awesome, C wistles!

I know this has been done to death, but hey, it is at least on topic.

Best,
Scott McCallister

My favorite Cs in the order of my preference:

  1. Clarke original
  2. Generation
  3. Clarke Sweetone
  4. Oak (I have to rub beeswax on it so I don’t drop that slick sucker)

I don’t know if it comes in under $30 but it would certainly be close. Jerry’s tweaked Waltons—he can’t reliably tweak Generation Cs but these sound like Gens—would be the best cheap C I’ve ever played by quite a long way. I haven’t tried one yet but I’d be prepared to bet that a Syn C would qualify as cheap and be a very good instrument.

A lot of people have noted that many brands that sound good in D are disappointing in C; perhaps the makers of cheap whistles just adapt their D design in a sloppy way. I like Clarkes and Sweetones in D but not in C. I actually quite like Susato Cs too. But Waltons and Syns have more character, IMO.

I have an oak and a Walton that are my favorites.

YES Syn whistles are great… and cheap… provided you don’t want to play more than one whistle at the same time

In other words, if you got a syn C whistle (or any key) you can get other bodies in other keys… for very little money…

But, I also like oaks… and I agree that sweetone c’s are not so good.

I have also heard Walton Cs and they are decent…

But the best whistle for your money has got to be Syns…

check out http://www.eng.uwaterloo.ca/~nlbrown/Photos/SynWhistles/ for some pictures of my Syns… the single shots are Ds, but they all look the same…

All are in USD:
One Syn Whistle head: $30
Seven Syn Whislte bodies: $35
Shipping from Australia to Canada (and probably most places…): $5

Total for what ends up being seven very playable whistles: $70

Very cheap…

Hoover,
Oak.

Two of the very best I’ve played in that price range.

Hoover Whitecap or a different model..?

Susato C.

Feadog nickel plated C. Nice and clear (more so than the brass) with reasonable volume, and looks great.

Sweetone C. Reliable quality and cheap.

I’ve found Generation C to be good, Susato and Oak C to both be very good and very stable whistes.

Any Hoover frankly, though I think his whitecaps and the newer blacktops will fit the cost you stated closer.

Walton Golden Tone C is the best !

PhilO

PhilO, got a stash somewhere you’d like to unload? If not, I do believe their kinda difficult to come by…

I own and play regularly several C whistles
these include:

generation…not bad by any means

meg…bit dissappointed with this one

sweetone..quite nice

1 soodlums and 1waltons (basically the same whistle and by far the pick of the bunch,
I will not buy any more C whistles as i am very happy with the waltons, to my ear as good as it gets
regards
David

Hmmm …
Good to know that I am either not mad OR not alone.
:sunglasses:

I went to the local whistle place a few months back wanting either a Clare or an Oak. They didn’t have any Oaks, but tried a bunch of Clares, along with Gens, Sweetones, and Waltons (I had a Clarke for many years that I unloaded). I left with a Walton’s nickel. I like it more than a couple of $100 C’s that I have. It’s got a big sound (as in it sounds like a big whistle, not as in it’s overly loud), a good pop, and plays well right off the shelf.

I was really disappointed with the Clares, as I’ve never had a Clare D (all brass) that I didn’t like, and I’ve had a few. Just goes to show you how difficult a good C is to make.

Unfortunately I cannot make any salient comment to you
tho’ I would like to.

You see I have this sweet little number in C
but the label came off when I was cleaning it
and I can’t remember the make.

All I know is that its Irish maid
with a green fipple
and never fails …

I’ve got a Generation C that I love. It is an old green top though. I like it enough that it’s the only C I’ve ever needed.

There are two good ways to deal with a miracle:-
you can let it in or live it out …

:stuck_out_tongue:

I have a clarke C that is determined to have a squawk on one note somewhere no matter what I do to it. I’ve got 3 Ds that tweaked up just great in about five minutes apiece. I hear that originally, clarkes came in only C. Good Lord.
The Gen C came right out of the box halfway decent. My sweetone in C does not play in tune very well. I need to take another 1/8 off the end of it. I swear it came 3/8 inches too long.
Great. Now I want to go look for &%&#! whistles in C to order.
I wish they made more cheap ones in Bb.
