Google Images

Perhaps it is time I quit using Google (and Google using me). But it has been convenient for finding stuff. Now I’ve noticed that image search results have changed, and I find it bewildering and a little frustrating.

No longer do I see at the bottom links like
1 2 3 4 5 6 Next
as are on the main search results page.
Instead there are no links, and the results page is titled “Page 2” at the top. More results are revealed as I scroll down, but doing so immediately after “Page 2” I see something like “Page 21” or other higher numbers, never “Page 3” (and never “Page 1”).
What is the logic of this, how can I go to a page of next image results?
And the java popup images are also annoying, especially on the target pages. Do they think I am blind and need help finding the image?

It seems I am not the only one who is frustrated:

Strange … I’m still seeing the good old results format you describe, with 20 image results per page and the familiar Goooooooooogle links at the bottom. Maybe because I’m using an old (i.e. antiquated) browser? Or because I don’t sign in or use any custom settings?

I get what Hans gets, nowadays. I suspect it is a browser thing.
Somebody at Google HQ thinks it’s an improvement, evidently, and there you have it.

you don’t have the plugins to do the cutesy stuff

Google has adopted Bing’s presentation.

You may be experiencing a bug. My first page
of results isn’t headed Page 1, but I get all the
subsequent pages in the correct sequence:
Page 2, Page 3, etc.
You can probably blame Bing for the change.
Google’s trying to keep up with the Joneses.

I like the color picker to the left. Try searching
for something with a lot of different results (for
example, Bill Cosby) and then clicking on a color
under the “Black and White” link on the sidebar.
It narrows down to images in which that color
is represented a lot.

Here’s all the yellow-y Bill Cosby images:

thanks, I found the “bug” re page numbering: I had no valid google cookie. Once I changed th eimage search settings and saved the new preferences, the “bug” was sorted. I still liked the old format better. Opera shows the old format, Firefox the new.

Hm. Internet Exploder shows the old way, too.
Safari on Windows: new way. I wonder if it’s
an HTML 5 thing?

Interesting … So it is browser-dependent. Is there a page customization setting that lets you choose old style vs. new style?

I use an HTTP proxy that lets me spoof whatever browser I care to report to the server. Handy for thwarting stuff like this.

I hate the new Google News layout, too. :imp:

I couldn’t find one. According to Wikipedia:

But I can’t get that to work.

Why’s that? (I have no experience with the old news.google)

the "switch to"s work fine for me

they’re in the middle of the footer & I didn’t need the Ctrl, I just had to get to the bottom of the page

It’s the same problem as the trend in the other results pages. It used to be a nice, clean 2-column layout that made it very easy to scan the headlines quickly at a glance. Now it’s a single center column, and all junked up with crap on either side, including crap news about murders and celebrities and sports. And with my older browser I can no longer customize the layout.

Google is forgetting its roots. Way back when, AltaVista and Yahoo were the top search sites. Both soon became craptastic as everyone started competing for “portal page” dominance, the trend du jour. Then Google appeared with it’s minimalist interface and everyone switched over. Now they’re trying to out-Bing Bing and losing their soul in the process.

Grrr. And don’t get me going about Flash. And HTML standards compliance. And the damn kids can get off my lawn, too. :stuck_out_tongue:

Silverlight :open_mouth:

I got these Facebook Friends who always complain about the latest change because they liked the previous version better but they complained about that change too because they liked the previous version better but they complained about that change too because they liked the…

oy! and the cost of retraining 'em, le’me tell ya!

Oh, you’re right. At the bottom of the images results
is a “Switch to basic version” link. I think that’s what
the “Ctrl-End” bit was about, just getting you to the
bottom of the page.

Well, there you go, hans.

yeah, I was guessing the “Ctrl+End” was IE
not that it was worth exploring

That crossed my mind, but as I said in a prev.
post, IE doesn’t show the new images format.

Mozilla’s help says Ctrl-End is for the whole
focused tab, and End is for the current page.
Not sure why that would matter.

oh yeah…

what brings us back to the which standard for bling thing
