Good News

For those interested. The Mackay Choral Society, winner of last years North Queensland Eisteddfod will be performing Gilles Mathieu’s Irish Mass. It is a free concert that will be performed on December 14. This is, we think, the first time the work has been performed outside of Lyon in France. I will be playing Uilleann Pipes and Low Whistle.

No, it was played three times this year in Nancy, France, as well. I played the piping score. Just one thing, what’s written on the score is not always what you can hear on the MP3 tracks on Gilles Mathieu’s website… Good luck and have fun. As far as I’m concerned, it was a great thing to do.

Hi Oliver

I’m glad it has been. The work is really wonderful and there are some great moments in it. It proves yet again that bagpipes and orchestra can be a possible combination.

Yeah your right the score is slightly different to the recording. Try convincing members of an orchestra that added unwritten ornamentations are not bad notes but add flavor and rhythm to the work.

The conductor gave the trad musicians license to add to the score, i.e. extra duets and harmony. I ended up adding an extra piping part in Is Naofa Thu. That way all three soloists minus the Harpist where playing the last part of the jig movement together.

Was that you on the LastFM recording? If not have you got a recorded version of your interpretation. It’d be an interesting exercise to compare all the interpretations to date.

Well, no it’s not me you can hear on the videos. My interpretation was slightly different anyway, and I tried to respect the score more accurately, except for the ornamentation, just talking about rhythm here.
I don’t have any audio recording, just a couple of videos.
