i am on vacation visiting my folks in Asheville, NC. i am thinking about stopping by Chris Abell’s place to see him. i will probably end up buying one, even though there is a waiting list.
Wow! It’s an experience, meeting a whistlemaker. I myself visited Colin Goldie and got to see the place where he manufactured his Overtons. He told me loads of stories about whistles and whistlemaking. The enthousiasm makes you love your whistle even better. And what’s more, whistlemakers tend to trade a lot and get a collection of whistles. I had the chance to see and try some 40 different expensive whistles.
So, if it’s the same with Chris Abell, you’re a lucky man! And his whistles are beautiful for ear and eye. Good luck!
Nah-- those whistle makers are a bunch of bums 
Speaking for myself, I love having visitors to the shop (aka spare bedroom), even if they’re not interested in buying a whistle. Anyone passing through the NY Capital District (Albany area) is always welcome. Play a couple of tunes, check out some whistles (yes, I have a fair number by other makers) etc.
I’ve personally met John Sindt and Walt Sweet (several times) and really enjoyed visiting both of their shops. And Glenn Schultz, of course

I’m sending off payment to Chris on Monday morning, should be playing my new high-d very soon 
a welcome change to my large bore chieftain.

Chris isn’t nearly as chatty as Colin. 
Both great fellows and top notch whistle makers though, just very different personalities.
That said, when one visits Chris and sees his flutes, one gains a completely different perspective on what “High Quality Craftsmanship” really means. However do have the courtesy, with any maker, to call ahead and see if the timing of your planned visit will be okay, it can really be disruptive to simply show up unannounced.

just got back from Abell’s shop. it was sooo AWESOME!!! he is such a nice gy and let me play his instruments. it is a whistle i will definitely buy soon. such a sweet sound. it was a nice shop.
