Hello Tooters,
I would like to obtain an advice regarding breath management for flutes.
History about me:
I started tooting since 13 but was not serious enough. During that time,
I shifted back and forth to voice due to puberty at 14 then revisited tooting about 2 years or so.
After somehat mastering the demands of whistles, I started playing to Church in various whistle Keys staring from high F whistle to Low D whistle.
After being somewhat bored with the whistle, I shifted to flutes primarily for Low note volume issue. Several months after practicing I have mastered the Low D Flute embouchure demands and developed dimples that was not even there from before.
I’ve been shifting whistles and flute from time to time to gain mastery and efficiency to both instrument. I have embraced the fact that whistles and flutes are different instrument and I understood the strength and the weakness of each.
This is what bothers me the most.
When I was starting with flute I find that the high notes are hard to attain due to the embouchure focusing, but after that, I find that the second octave use lesser amount of air.
Recently I purchased a Low C flute from a respected Maker and I am having some struggle to maintain long first octave notes.
The flute rocked outside the Box but I was just wondering why is it that the Lower notes are damn harder than I expect it to be. The second octave is much easier that I can play 25-30 seconds of long sustained notes with breath vibrato.
I thought that the cough reflex is just for beginner but then again the reflex happened to me again after about 2-3 years just by tooting the low note.
I’ve played a flute that has a bigger embouchure hole (Dixon) which requires a lot of air but having a Low C of a different brand that has smaller embouchure is harder.
I fully say that it is me and not the flute as the D flute of the same maker is very easy. It is the C that requires some taming.
I am planning to continue doing so but on a staggard basis to minimized the cough-cough moment.. The booming low notes are addicting that I want to go Lower.
Just tell me how to breath life into it as I go lower.
I want to have a Low B and Low A (below Low D) soon.
Regards,
Angel
