I was working the nightwatch on the homicide desk, and it was a dark night in the city, but then, it is always a dark night in the city because it’s, well . . . it’s night. I had just put the wrap-up on particularly gruesome case involving a wood-chipper, a Quaker and a duck, when a call came in from the captain.

“Friday,” he said – that’s me, Sergeant Gonzo Friday – “Patrol reports a possible homicide over in Fipple. They want your help. The victim isn’t dead yet, but the prognosis isn’t good. Take a ride over there, and see what’s going on.”

“But captain,” I said, “Gannon’s not here yet.”

“And he won’t be,” replied the captain. “He retired two years ago. It’s time for you to get a new partner. The new kid is waiting for you in the garage.”

“But, captain . . .”

“No ‘buts,’ Friday,” he cut me off. “Go. And try to get there before the poor victim dies.”

“Yes, boss,” I said, but without my characteristic enthusiasm, because I didn’t want a new partner. “I’m on my way.”

Before I could hang up, he added one more thing.

“Oh, and one more thing, Friday.”

“Yes, sir?”

“I got the report back from the lab on that Louisville Slugger you sent in.”

“You did?”

“Yes, I have it right here. And you were right.”

“I was right?”

“Yes, it was a bat.”
