Let’s practice our Gaeilge, little by little.
This thread is aimed mostly at beginners; they can ask questions, post messages in Irish, etc – but intermidiate and advanced speakers are also welcome (please feel free to advice beginners; grammer check, spelling check, tipping useful expressions etc).
For fada, besides using the Irish fonts, you can write thus;
Feado/g i/seal.
As for myself, I’m doing Chapter 8 of Learning Irish. Anyone else doing/completed the book?
Á = Alt + 0193
É = Alt + 0201
Í = Alt + 0205
Ó = Alt + 0211
Ú = Alt + 0218
á = Alt + 0225
é = Alt + 0233
í = Alt + 0237
ó = Alt + 0243
ú = Alt + 0250
Print this, cut out the bit you need, and stick in on the side of your monitor for future reference (and, no, I have no idea how to say any of this in Irish).
Should work. You need to make sure your “Num Lock” key is on. Then hold down the “Alt” key while you press the number sequence. When you lift the “Alt” key, you should see the vowel with the fada.
Tá áthas orm go bhfuil [keyboard] beilgeach/franncach agam!
Is minic a scríobhaim as franncach agus mé ag obair, ach is fearr liom anois an [keyboard] sin, mar tá sé i bhfad níos símplí na sínte a cur isteach le [dead key]ná leis an [keypad]!
Mar sin, tá [keyboard] beilgeach freisean ar an ríomhaire a cheannaigh mé chun é a uasáid sa bhaile.
Yo, Tak. Are you using Windows or Mac? The codes I gave are for Windows. If you’re still having problems on Windows try the following:
There’s an exe for all Windows fonts called Character Map (C:\WINDOWS\system32\charmap.exe). I find this so useful that I have a shortcut on my desktop to it. Find a font that is fairly complete, like the dreaded Times New Roman. Select the accented character you want, or just hold your mouse over the character, and see what code comes up. Some of the Unicode (U + xxxx ) characters are not available from the keyboard. You should be able to Select and Copy the character you want and paste it into C&F.
