This proved to be interesting… Staple needed a huge squish nearly head to toe at 5/32nds + a rush in the staple. Tone was not at all noticeably affected.
Enjoy

I bought that chanter (with no reed) a few weeks ago on ebay from a guy who said it was a Bb chanter. I was pretty disappointed to find out that it’s a B chanter instead, but I’m certainly not disappointed in the sound that Brazenkaine is getting out of it. Kinda saves the day, I’d say.
Hi Jeff
I thought you had it playing in Bb with the UPB C reed?
Anyway B is my favourite key and the chanter sounds really nice.
David
Davy,
You might’ve been converted to Bb if you’d heard Cian Talty play the Bb Harrington at WCSS!!!
…Savage!
IIRC, the chanter was advertised as being 18 inches long. That would certainly suggest Bb or close to it. What’s the the lower hand stretch like?
incorrect… it’s a 1/16 shy of 18". Peter Hunter, too confirms that Bb is 18.75. My hands are med. sized, so any reports of RH stretch would be skewed. I can play it but would be uncomfortable w. anything more so.
Isnt’ that a B set? You know how people call B’s Bd sets but really mean B flat sets or don’t know the difference. Have you been able to compare your instruments to any recordings you have of him?
Bye now,
Pato.
…just parroting what the MC said during the intro. i need to locate the file and will do a comparison at some point and report back.
good question!
Heard from a little leprashawnee thruckalee howe that Cian’s pipes are indeed in Bd… true Bflat… faoi B…
Pat.
Tá Faoi cinnte! I’m recalling that they clearly sounded lower than B. Come to think of it Pat Mitchell’s set was superb, and so was Gay McKeon’s Kiernan C chanter.
There were so many fine instruments there…!
Hi Brazenkaine
My first flat chanter was a Ginsberg Bb chanter in rosewood. I got it in the same condition as Jeff, that is reedless. It was given to Jim Daily to reed up and he ended up using C chanter reeds in it, it plays just sharp of Bb with a lovely tone and just needs a little tape on the back D to tune it. Did you try a C reed in the chanter, Jeff did say he tried UPB C reeds in the chanter as I recollect.
As to me not liking Bb take a look at my avatar

Hi Jeff

Actually that was a different chanter…Brazenkaine made a nice curly maple reed for the UPB C chanter I acquired. I don’t think I tried the C reed that came with the UPB C chanter because that reed didn’t play at all. I didn’t try the maple C reed in the Ginsberg because I had sent both chanters (along with the Froment) at the same time to Brazenkaine to apply his magic.
Every reed that I tried to put in, was not playable. Pitch wise, the instrument seemed to want to lean towards the key of B. My feeling was to make it so that this instrument could be played with other instruments that are in the key of B, or ones that are very very close to it. in addition, it just doesn’t make sense to me to use a C reed and have it play somewhere in between keys. I’d much rather gear this particular instrument do something that is more “standard.”
Here is updated sentiment from Peter:
‘Thought I’d best send corrigendum re 18.5" being Bb… 18.75 would be approx chanter type acoustic max and 0.25 longer than ideally desirable”
