"Getting" the rhythm to a tune/song - what type is easiest f

Hey all-

This came up in a discussion over on the pipes forum, and I wondered how true it held.

There are a couple of hardshoe Irish dances that are prevalent, being the Treble Jig and the Hornpipe. Dancers that “get” the timing and rhythm for the treble jig often struggle with same on the hornpipe, and vice versa.

I am one of those dancers that “gets” the hornpipe, and I struggle with the treble jig. When playing, I find that I can pick up hornpipes easily and fast, whereas jigs take me more time and repetition.

Anyone else notice anything like that?

It’s because, regardless of instrument or genre (classical or trad), dividing the beat by three is harder (ex-jigs) than by two (hornpipes, reels). A lot of ‘legit’ players also have this problem.
