Bet you’ve seen this message before. How do I get started from scratch with only an intense desire to play the uilleann pipes? I have no idea how to obtain a starter set. I have seen them reasonably priced on Ebay but am wary about such a purchase. I need advisement.
I think most of us started out the same way. A great desire but no idea where to start.
Read the FAQ at the top of the page. Lots of information. Get connected with a local club if possible. If that’s not possible, travel to a tionól (pipers’ gathering) and and check things out. Often people will be selling instruments at tionóil. Do not buy anything of of eBay without checking with someone who knows their stuff. If you don’t know anyone, simply post something here and ask for private messages about a particular set.
In the meantime, get a ton of piping CD’s and start absorbing.

Our German Uilleann Pipes Society - Deutsche Uilleann Pipes Gesellschaft/DUPG bought some practice sets for beginners to be able to try before going to buy. Probably you’ll find a similar solution or a pipe maker who will give you a set for free/deposit for some months.
