Generation D vs Eflat

Can someone tell me if the tube diameter for Generation D vs Eflat is the same?

In the vintage ones, the size is the same. Just grabbed two and compared them. I don’t have the modern ones tho

The current Eb is the same as the 1980s D.

Vintage D and Vintage E flat and more recent D

Strange, isn’t it, that the Generation D is the only size that doesn’t use dedicated tubing and a dedicated head.

Back in the 70s when I was starting out an old-timer explained to me (I have no idea if it’s true) that the original keys were the Bb/Eb pair and the C/F pair each size with dedicated head and tubing.

Then due to demand for D they stretched an Eb.

This guy claimed that the D head and tubing weren’t quite right from the get-go, and it was ironic that the copycats that came along later generally stuck to it.

Mr Gumby would know the truth of it.

I don’t know about that. I knew you were going to post this this, though.

All I can say is the earliest Ds I have, both Generation and other makes, used the same tube size as the present ones. They have been around a long time.

It’s interesting that the Generations are in pairs like Renaissance woodwinds, Bb/Eb, C/F, D/G.

Eb and D are the only ones just a semitone apart which I suppose explains it.
