Generation "Boho" Whistles

(… several weeks later…) Hey there, has anyone who got one tried to remove the head? (@Sirchronique, you mentioned you wanted yours for tweaking anyway?) Wouldn’t the hot water-method damage the paisley? :astonished:

I haven’t gotten around to removing the head yet, but might soon. I don’t plan to “tweak” it, but I want to try the head on regular gen bodies to see if there is any change. I was wondering if maybe the pattern applied is perhaps messing around with how the air column inside (or around the holes) behaves. After playing the whistle for awhile, I’d have to say it isn’t particularly good at all. Probably the worst gen D I’ve owned, if I’m to be honest. Stuffy nasal sounding low end, a bit too much extraneous noise in the high end, regardless of how it is blown. Don’t get me wrong, it is indeed a playable instrument, but nothing I’d choose to play if I had just about anything else handy.

I’ll let you know if the hot water damages the pattern, but I don’t imagine it would. It seems to be applied pretty sturdily, or, at least moreso than most painted whistles. I don’t think I’ll play it enough to find out whether or not it comes off easily with regular use.

HI Sirchronique, thanks for the reply!

Yes, maybe a little bit… although you’d have to swap-check this, of course.

Mine happens to play quite nicely, actually… it’s probably the usual quality fluctuations, not the paisley per se then. Anyway, this is why I’d like to make it tunable and putty the head (while this won’t really make a bad one better, it can improve the tone of a whistle which is rather good already IME).

Thanks, this would be great! (Edit: actually I just tried it myself but didn’t get the head off. Maybe the paisley makes it stick extra strong. Or maybe it just makes me over-cautious, hehe.)

Yes, I imagine it is very likely luck of the draw as well, as with any gen. However, transferring the head might still give a general idea of how much of it is due to receiving a poorer quality head (which I am sure is the main culprit) and how much, if any, of it is due to the stuff applied to the tube.
