Geek Help: Ripping CDs to a chip

OK, so I have the mobile phone (Sony Ericsson W580i) and the 4 gb chip. The chip comes with a flash-drive–like converter, so I can plug it into my computer to download music.

I’ve copied music to my computer using RealPlayer or something. Do I just copy that onto the chip?

I was hoping the chip came with explicit instructions, but noooooo. Sigh.

Once you plug it in to your computer it should show up as an extra disk drive, you should be able to just drag and drop music files onto it using windows explorer.

Here is the link to download the appropriate software.

That’s if want to download to the phone’s memory.
Lamby’s downloading to a smartcard and putting that into
the phone, which does not require any extra software.

LAMBCHOP: Once you drop the files onto the chip, you have
to make sure you remove it “safely” before you disconnect
it from the computer. When you first plugged the thing in, a tiny
icon appeared on the right part of your taskbar (near where
the time is shown). This icon looks like a green arrow pointing
to the left and slightly down, over a gray rectangle at the same
angle. If you double-click on that icon, it should bring up a window
called “Safely Remove Hardware”. There should be one item in
that window that says something like “USB Mass Storage Device”,
or “Smart Card” or something. Click on it, then click the “Stop”
button. You’ll get a window called “Stop a Hardware Device”. Just
click OK, and the little green arrow icon should pop up a little
text bubble (as if it were speaking in a comic strip) that says
“Safe to remove hardware”. Then you can disconnect the device
from the computer.
The reason for this operation is because the computer might still
be writing data to the smart card, and if you disconnect it too early
you won’t get the data that hasn’t been written yet. But don’t worry
too much, you won’t blow anything up if you do it wrong.
