OK, I’m being stalked, so I had to get a cell phone. Now that I have it, I see that I can do lots of fun things with this.
It’s a Sony Ericsson W580i. That means it’s a Walkman and a camera, too. I need a memory chip for it. My choices are the Sandisk W2 1 gb, 2 gb, 4 gb, and 8 gb.
My thinking is that I will load some CDs on this – possibly books on tape – and listen to it during my lengthy drives down south. I doubt if I will be photographing very much – other than my stalker – but you never know.
Here are the questions:
How much can I put on these disks? One CD? Two?
I ask because I need to decide which chip to get. Depending on where you look, you can find the 8 gb for about what you’d pay for the 4 elsewhere.
Also, is the 8 gb chip compatible with a W580i? Yes, I looked on the net, but the best I could find was a “might” and I’m not sure what that means.
One 8 gb comes with a flash-drive converter thingy, so you can apparently download the music onto the disk directly instead of using the phone’s cable.
If you are ripping CDs to MP3 at a reasonable bit rate, then an average track should come in under 5 meg in size.
Taking into account formatting etc will reduce the effective size of your card, then an 8 gig card should hold at least 1500 tracks.
From Sony’s website it is hard to tell if it takes 2 gig or 4 gig cards.
2 gigs should give you around 400 tracks.

Edited to add - it seems that it will take an 8 gig card, but Sony Ericsson do not guarantee that it will be recognised as more than 4 gigs untill there has been a software update issued.
Hey Lamby. What are you planning to use as headphones? Are you getting
some kind of headset to plug in, or a bluetooth headset or something? If
you’re planning on using regular headphones (like you’d plug into a Walkman),
you might need an adapter.
Thank you, BD! Now I understand what Sony was saying. A 4 mb would probably be fine, then.
It came with a headset. It’s does double-duty as the antenna for the FM radio. Wasn’t too bad, at least with the radio. Might not be too good for actual music.
Elsewise, I was thinking of getting the Bluetooth headset, since there is no cord. That way, I can listen to my “rain in forest” CD in my office and still be able to move. One of Dale’s soothing chill-out CDs would be good, too.
Lambi, I hate the thought of you being harrassed like this, have you contacted the police, seems like it wouln’t be too hard to set up a sting to catch the jerk. Do be very carefull!
I have the Sony Ericsson K550i which is similar to yours. The headset is fine for music, at least for popular music. For classical, I found it was not loud enough to hear the quiet passages on the flights to and from Michigan a couple of weeks ago. (My phone has a flight mode where the radio bits are dead, so is OK for using in the air, at least if you don’t let the flight attendants see what your headset is connected to. I’m not sure if a wireless headset would be allowed on a flight.)
However, mine takes the Micro memory sticks. I didn’t think they made them as big as 8 gigs yet? Does yours take the bigger sticks? I have a 1 gig stick in mine and at the moment it contains 16 albums. That means I have to make a selection of music before a trip and copy to the phone. An 8 gig card would mean you could put well over a hundred albums on it and would rarely have to bother about changing the music on the phone. An 8 gig card would be considerably more expensive though.
PS. I find I use the camera quite a bit in my work taking snaps of stuff before going back to the shop to find the needed spares.
