Gearoid Ó hAllmhuráin, concertina & uillean piper virtuoso, and Irish music scholar (though, as with most players of his kind, began with the whistle), will be playing at the Plough & Stars in San Francisco on Aug 28.

Is Gearoid a piper too? I’ve only ever heard him play concertina. (Well, and talk profusely.)
Well, according to his bio (http://www.gearoid.us/), he took up the pipes in the 70s, and studied with Sean Reid, though I’ve always heard of him as a concertina player as well.

He lives in California, I thought in the San Francisco area. Doesn’t he play around there more often?
As far as I know, he still teaches at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, but I can’t say for sure. I really know of him from his book, ‘A Pocket History of Irish Traditional Music’, though I know he once taught at the University of San Francisco, but I believe that was some time ago. I sure haven’t seen him 'round these parts in recent years.
