thanks

I don’t own one of his newer style pvc mouthpieces but I do own an earlier version that he made out of copper that is excellent. Gary is very pleasurable to do business with. Here is a link to get in touch with him.

I’m going to order one this week. I’ll post a review when able. Meanwhile I got a hold of Gary by way of his profile. His on line name is raindog1970.

Several people have put tunes on Clips and Snips using Gary’s mouthpiece… they sound good to me

Dave.

I’d be interested in a review. From the pictures, they look like Sindt copies.

I have three of them, a D, C and Bb and I’m very pleased with them. Actually the C mouthpiece is on a Mello D (I think that’s the name of it) and it’s my favourite whistle for playing at sessions, not too loud but cuts through the mix well. Once in a while if I’m sitting next to a box player I’ll pull out a Desi Seery plastic jobbie just to watch my neighbour’s ears bleed (that thing could shatter windows).
Seriously though, if you have some old whistle barrels lying around and you don’t like taking the Copelands to strange pubs, give Gary’s heads a try. The Bb I have has a lovely tone, the price is right, and Gary’s a stand-up businessman.
The heads are somewhat similar to the Sindt in profile but are, of course, made out of plastic. Another similarity to the Sindt is in the quality control. I own a few Sindts (I run into John frequently at concerts and ceilis) so the comparisons were obvious. If you want a whistle that sounds like a Sindt though, buy a Sindt. Gary’s heads have a different sound to them. If you must buy a pig in a poke I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

I have a Bb head. It’s kind of hard to describe the tone. Nice overtones, little chiff, very well controlled- you don’t have to fight it or concentrate on getting the breath at just the right pressure. I have it on a Generation nickel tube. The original head had some raspiness I wasn’t crazy about. I think the raindog head retains a flavor of ‘trad’ sound, but has its own character as well.

I posted Greeneyed Lass on the Jigs page of Clips with that head (12 tunes down the page). I haven’t heard the high d head. Gary has sent me some interesting emails describing his obsessive tinkering with the voicing and stuff. If I were making whistles, I’d sure be consulting with him. It sounds like he’s figured out a lot of variables for altering the voicing to his preferences. Obviously a labor of love. (Personally, I think he’s nuts, but, that’s why we relate well  I’m not known for my normalness.)

I just went and listened to that post. Yikes! I still blame the slippery nickel tube, which was slipping in my sweaty hands.
