I just received flute and whistle player Garry Walsh’s new CD in the mail. It’s called “Uncovered,” and it features lots of rare tunes that Garry learned from his parents and grandparents in Co. Cork.
It’s unusual these days to find an entire CD of tunes that you’ve never heard before; many of these melodies have never been recorded, and according to the liner notes many of them were even new to Nicholas Carolan at the Irish Music Archives in Dublin.
Garry’s a fine player with great breath control and phrasing (he takes an exceptionally long phrase at the beginning of a reel on track 2). The accompaniment and overall sound is sometimes a bit “modern” for my taste, but there are several great unaccompanied tracks with just Bb whistle and fiddle, or fiddle, flute, and melodion.
