Hey everybody. I know there’s a gardening thread ongoing, but instead of hijack it I thought I’d ask my question in a new post.
We’re about in the end of summer. I have one big pot (about 10 gallons or so) on my patio that had a tomato plant in it. The tomato bore fruit and more fruit, then got some kind of tomato virus and died pretty much instantly.
Considering that it’s in the middle of summer, are there any flowers I could plant in that pot now (end of July) and enjoy blooms before the frost got here?
Or should I just wait until autumn and put tulips in it?
I would not plant anything in that soil now–whatever it was will just spread and be there next year. Dispose of the soil. Thorougly clean and sanitize the container. Bleach comes to mind. Fill with fresh soil.
Plant something like kitchen herbs that will grow quickly. You can harvest them and freeze or dry them for the winter.
Make up your mind. In the first sentence you claim it’s the end of summer. Then you say it’s only the middle of summer. I would not plant anything related to tomatoes in the same pot, but you should be able to put something else in it, like radishes and lettuce.
Or some flowers might be nice. You can pick up lots of annuals pretty cheap now that summer is fairly advanced.
Thanks both. The thing that killed my tomato was tomato disease, or something like that. It’s specific to tomatoes, eggplants and the like (a neighbor of mine told me what it was), so I don’t think I will have to get rid of all the dirt.
