Sir Jimmy played a Clarke in his childhood. Although I’m sure at one time he must have tried a generation-style whistle, he currently plays an Abell.
The only thing on that page that was Galway’s was the booklet on how to play the whistle (which looks like it was written in the 60’s or 70’s).

I saw him on a televised Mancinni concert playing “Baby Elephant Walk” on what looked a lot like my Generation D. Anyway it motivated me to practice (for a while) I’d already realized my flute playing was a lost cause, but maybe, just maybe I could get the hang of the whistle…( I did sorta get “Pink Panther” on my flute…still working on it on whistle.

I bought a whistle with the James Galway booklet and a sticker with his autograph on it in the late 70’s. I LOVE it!!! its a great whistle, especially for the c - natural. I learned on this whostle, and have only started using other in the last 2 years. I woudl buy another if given the chance.
The Galway whistle is actually an exeptionally good Generation whistle. I bought one recently on eBay. And when I examined it and scrutinized it with my magnifying glass and microscope i could decide that it actually is a generation head in black plastic - its almost identical! However thera are some slight differeces from todays standard D-generation head in the end of the windway. The slightly curved “ski slope” is a bit longer on the Galway head. I combined this head with a body from Feadog (which is better in tune), and created the ultimate super whistle for those who like the generation sound. I´ve actually tryed a lot of them and there is no better than the Galway/Generation whistle head. My piece of advice for all lovers of the generation sound is to do the same - vaccuum the market or eBay for these remarkable whistles from the 70:s!
The “ski slope” is an ingenius design treat on the Generation whistle. I´ve always wondered why the flor on the windway and the blade doesn´t aligne on these whistle - and they still sound good - which they shouldn´t ? The answer is the arced wind way (the slope) which direct the wind slightly upwards towards the blade (labium).
