This was my first foray into fifes, and I’m not taking to the disciplined embouchure, but it is a lovely instrument. Photo available upon request, but it can be seen here, http://peelerfifes.com/fifes/resin/, the blue one.
I paid $90 and will sell it for $50 including shipping to the continental US.
I would also trade for a flute or whistle in F of comparable value.
The fifes look beautiful, but the video reinforces my preference for flutes pitched more than a wee bit lower. The high squeaks are hard to bear, in my opinion. I can understand why the OP wants to trade for an F flute. http://www.peelerfifes.com/videos/
I’ve heard way better fife playing than that video - soft and delicate, with no squeakiness. Ralph Sweet has some nice clips on his site. I think it takes no small bit of practice though.
i have several Bb fifes (including one from Sweet). i love playing them, but i have been asked by the humane society and local law enforcement to abstain from from playing in the third register… not sure why…
The fife in the video is a military fife and it’s meant to be heard over cannon fire and the shrieks of the dying.
The Sweetheart fifes, most of them, are pitched to be played in the first two octaves and can be played
without squeaks. It’s possible to play quietly enough the upper register. I’ve not much played them in the
third octave.
