I’m reluctantly selling my keyless blackwood Hamilton, bought new from Hammy in ‘01. It is an excellent player, everything you’d expect in a Hammy, with no issues or repairs. This flute was my main flute, but I no longer play it regularly, and – besides seriously needing cash – feel guilty letting it sit un-played. I am asking $900, plus S/H, and prefer to sell within the States. I can supply pictures, if necessary, but basically it looks like a Hamilton, and comes in an old Cavallero case.
what a deal !
Hammy’s flutes are so powerful and such a great tone, amazingly comfortable for the fog horn that they are.
i can’t think of a better flute with slid for the price.
flute still for sale?
It is, Eilam.. dangerous, too. As I’m trying to sell it, I have it on my mind. So I take it out and play it, and it reminds me what a great flute it is. So I think about not selling it…
But, yes. Still for sale. And thanks for the bump!
i don’t know if your Hammy is still for sale?
just played mine, i forget what a huge sound it has, i’ve been playing smaller flutes for some time now, in part because i like the tone complexity of the R&R type flute, but the hammy has such a great tone, very complex and deep, unlike some of the Pratten type flutes that to me sound thin.
Yeah; it’s funny how selling an instrument (or trying to) seems to renew my interest in playing it – I’ve been playing the Hammy more since I thought about selling it than I had for awhile before. It’s truly a great flute - really well cut, unbeatable tone.
Still, it is for sale, as I have some pretty serious upcoming bills I need to cover… That said,
I might consider a partial cash/partial flute trade - I’m planning on doing a lot of hiking this summer, and was thinking of an M&E delrin…
Hola, E!
(and bumperoo)
Gordon’s a solid fellow, and a good Hammy is a nice thing.
Thanks for the bump, Cathy (and the opportunity to bump it, myself, without being too obnoxious)…
It’s your turn again, Eilam… ![]()
i know, but i’m still 4 days too early
,
i would say that i heard recordings of gordon playing that Hammy…
gordon is such great player and that flute sounds as good as you’d expect,
for that price, i’m amazed the flute is still up for sale.
Lack of money, I guess. I have a Seery, not an M&E, towards a trade (if that was acceptable), but I probably couldn’t swing much additional cash.
I want this flute so bad!!!
but I have nothing, money or otherwise. ![]()

How about a few clips…
Thanks, guys… especially Eilam.
Kevin, unfortunately, cash is what I need right now (hence the flute sale). What I was thinking aloud about was that I might use a portion of the sale to get a Delrin backup flute, most probably the M&E Rudall.
Cricket, as you probably know, I’m really not into the post-clips-on-the-forum thing; I’ve sent crude home-recorded clips to Eilam - and he to me - over the years, as we’re good friends. The Hammy clips (which I didn’t keep) were to compare it to a Hernon Rudall I bought about a year ago. The Hammy sounded like me on a Hammy, the Hernon, like me on a Hernon.
That said, if you’re actually interested in buying the flute, I’m sure I could record something and send it to you.
This is such a good news/bad news thing isn’t it? The good news is that, assuming a reasonable instrument, the sound is really mostly us. Of course, the bad news is that no matter what the flute, we are going to more or less sound the same anyway.
Sigh.

Not really bad news at all. Working with a great sounding flute allows you to pull the best out of it, which - in turn - makes you sound good. Flutes sound differently from one another, a bit, and they play/feel differently, so you shape your style around their strengths, or work hard against their weaknesses. Ultimately, though, it’ll sound like you, and hopefully that’ll be pretty good. Since we’re always working to sound better, it’s often more a matter of us catching up with a good flute, not the other way around.
when switching from one flute to the next, we sound the same, because we play the tune in the same manner as we just did on the other flute…and usually that was taught to us by the flute we play the most…
but i bet that if we recorded a set on one flute, then played a different flute for a month and recorded, we’d play it a bit differently and it would not anymore sound the same.
i usually play R&R type flutes. we are going to preform and my kids tell me they like the Pratten better…“it’s more breathy and open”…now i find that i need to adjust my playing…
stay more focused…keep my embouchure tighter…watch not to get too excited and run out of air…
it’s all good (nothing bad about working on ones embouchure), but i do wonder at times, would it not be easier to put the kids up on ebay?
i think flutes sound very different from each other, especially to us the players, and we need to like the flute we play …
anyway - Hammys are great flutes

!!! E-skya, you’re great
Probably require an awful lot of packing material, though.
But you wouldn’t want to sell off your boys – they rock! Thanks for the link. They’re wonderful, and I enjoyed it thoroughly.
Yeah, there’s nothing like that feeling of “I’m so in love with my flute right now I just want to … play it some more!” ![]()
catski, you are so right ! if i wait a few more years, they could drive to the new owner and save me shipping, plus, they’d be worth more (i think/hope
)
i am really in love with my new flute…it’s a pratten (Gallagher), very much like the Hammy but has G# and F keys which i use a lot.
Oh, cool! I didn’t know you’d gotten a JohnnyG.
Happy days!
He made my Bb flute and did the restoration on my Murray, including making keys to replace the ones that were missing. I couldn’t be happier. I think he does terrific work; his flutes are among the nicest ones I’ve played.
