FWIW-- Mopani (aka Mopane) is a wonderful whistle wood. It’s exceedingly hard and dense and takes a beautiful finish. I love working this wood: right off the lathe tool it requires almost no sanding before the finish is applied.

Beautiful whistle! I didn’t realize the price had gone up that much…I had a Blackwood & gold one a few years ago.

Gorgeous is right! :astonished:

Yup, I’ll agree. That’s a stunning piece of work. Have you a sound clip?

How do you take such good pictures???

Thank goodness; that was breathtaking, due both to the whistle and the pics. Mopane (or mopani) is I believe beginning to replace blackwood (purportedly getting scarce) as a standard for musical instrument makers - a real dense wood that is impervious to termites, for example and so in high demand. Many say that it conveys tonal qualities (at the risk of starting another thread about the effect or lack thereof of the material used on tonal qualities) even more beautifully than blackwood (perhaps just an advertisement by sellers of the wood, who knows). In addition to the joy of working with the wood Paul, it looks phenomenal paired up with sterling silver. Geez, I was holding my Copeland low F whilst looking at the pics and pondering… :astonished:
