Hello a unique halset for sale. I am selling to help fund an antique flute I am interested in.
The chanter is cocobolo by Bruce Childress and is blocked
for keys and could be upgraded. The drones are ebony Bayley Barrell drones and the
bag and bellows are by Bayley as well. The mounts are imitation ivory.
Price: 1050 pounds.
A set of barrell drones from Mike Hulme would cost 900 pounds (though with a mainstock switch) (I’m unsure about Bayley but I assume a similar price. You’d be getting a bag and bellows for an extra 50 and the Childress chanter for 100 pounds (around 150 American dollars: new in the range of 784).
Just found out a similar set with a Bayley chanter would run about 1200 pounds.
A practice set from Bruce would be about 1430 dollars.
This is a good savings over the same new from the respective makers.
There are three chanter reeds. The drone reeds are synthetic.The chanter reeds may need some adjusting to your climate but this is to be expected of any pipes and at least you’d have three reeds to work with. One was given to me by Finbar Furey.
The only issues are cosmetic one imitation Ivory mount is missing from the chanter
(it was chipped in half and I removed the rest) it can be replaced easily and
the barrell and mainstock have minor scratches again only comsemtic. The wrapping have just been redone by me very neatly in waxed thread from the National Piping Center.
Anyway the only thing different from other half sets is that there is no drone switch
but one could be added. I just use blue tac to stop the drones. I just place the tac on the barell when not in use.
I often thought of having drone little plugs turned attached by leather cord like on an old kenna one reg set I’ve seen and some
a or g drones and other bellows blown pipes use. The main stock is mini and has no room for regs so a new mainstock would need to be tied in to accomodate regs
Nice and compact for sessions. The three drones are the length of the chanter. One mic can pick up the three drones.
