The “Open Letter” thread I have stayed out of, mainly because I don’t know Azalin or SP, and have had no business/personal dealings with either one.
Just for the ones that think open forums such as usenet, newsgroups, bulletin boards, etc. are “free speech”, check out something that came up in the aquaria newsgroups a bit ago, and is still going on.

Evidently, the proprietor of Petswarehouse.com took exception to some posts deriding service, etc from his store. He sued them, any one that replied to them, and has now added names of their supporters (i.e. the defense fund webmin) to the suit.
While we all may think it is frivilous, and somewhat childish in a lot of respects, it can be taken to the extremes.
Something to think about.
