Just got “Up south” cd, really awesome UP piping, nice flowing and abit “different” I think than other UP players, perhaps the border/GHB influense comes “trough”
nice way
.Anybody else heard this record?
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: F#$k Eric Clapton. Fred Morrison is God.
Fred apparently got a number of tips and tricks on UP technique from Pat Broderick and Paddy Keenan (whom he met busking in Brittany in the early 80s). That being said, his playing has plenty of tight-fingered spice to it. More than one might expect from somebody coming from Scottish pipes. I don’t really think his GHB playing (which is about as good as is humanly possible to get) really has directly influenced his UP technique to a great degree…Musically, it’s all the same–Fred is Fred. However, his style of UP playing is very tasteful and original–just like his GHB/Border pipe playing. The only thing they have in common is that they’re different.
