I got an idea from hearing Mr. Gumpy’s recording and how he said it got more listens than the recordings of Ennis and others he had been posting here previously. What about some kind of thread entirely dedicated to forum members’ own recordings of their piping? I for one would be interested in hearing how each member plays their tunes. It could be a great way to learn new variations and technique from others to then put into one’s own playing, and also to get a feel of how different makers’ pipes can sound like. People could post their tunes randomly when ever they feel like, or there could be some kind of a “tune of the month” thing, where everyone plays their version and sends it in. Would there be interest in such activity?
It could be interesting but look at the flute clip thread, it could turn into a wankfest for the few.

I like the tune of the month idea.
UilleannThis ?
There is a Uilleann pipes section in the snips and clips

There is that “upload your tunes” thread on that other uilleann pipe forum.
Ha-ha! made you squint!

There’s a melodeon forum with a Tune of the Month, everyone posts something on YT or whatever. It’s a nice feature, sort of like a 21st century version of a tionol recital. People get lots of feedback, support, you get to hear a whole passel of different instruments, etc. If you look up ‘Tune of the Month’ on YT it shows up right off the bat. This is English melodeon btw. The forum bigwhigs decide what the TOTM is. Sometimes it’s the Theme of the Month - was hornpipes last time.
Oh, here it is! I was looking for this thread, and didn’t see it till now. Yeah, good idea. Would love to hear other’s pipes and piping.
Unlike the other forum I don’t think this forum has the facility to allow members to upload audio files.
That would be a convenient feature. ![]()
some of us whistlers had that idea last year and it wasnt welcome
its a pitty but we were told that this will not be allowed here and if we wanrt to do this we should do it on our own webspace …
so i did that and created our own little community website for this (see my signature) … not much happend there and i belive, that little bit, wouldnt have “disturbed” here but …so what
by the way any other instruments as whistles are welcome too ![]()
German Whistler is right. The Mods and Dale discussed this at great length before, and we concluded that we have neither the time, money, nor inclination for what it would take to implement a tune sharing/learning sub-site on the Chiffboard.
Offering server file storage for uploading audio/video clips would significantly increase our monthly costs, and there are free, dedicated sites for that. Our experience with the WhistleThis site suggests that demands on the Moderators’ volunteer time would double or triple. And the systematic Tune of the Month etc. model doesn’t fit well with the nature of an open-ended discussion board.
On the other hand, we’re happy to host a dedicated clip-sharing thread. The Whistle and Flute forums have had that for a long time. How it gets used is then entirely up to you guys.
Well, since some people are interested it could be worth a try
We will of course have to use something like box.com to upload the files, but that can’t be too difficult. I had a look at the other forum and it doesn’t seem to have nearly as much activity as this one does.
A suggestion to get things started: I can start a new thread in the beginning of next week (or just use this one) and post the first “tune of the month”. The first member to answer with their version gets to choose the next tune of the month. Or…? better ideas?
I have a suggestion, why not dedicate a separate thread for sound files only, and a companion thread for comments about the clips. Otherwise the files thread will get drowned with comments and it will be that much harder to find the links pipers have posted. BTW, I have used the free web host Jukeboxalive for years. It’s free and works quite well.
I second Lorenzo’s idea.
i like this idea!!!
Should we do it like “tune of the month” only, or both tune of the month and what ever tunes people want to post there? I think the latter is better, then people can also request tunes from other members and the “tune of the month” thing will only be a nice spice and some fun. I think it would also be good that the one to reply first with their version of the “tune of the month” gets to decide the next one. It would be more cumbersome to vote about them, or put the responsibility on one person only. What do you think?
In stead of having two threads, could it be done so that someone (a moderator or me or who ever) would always edit the first post and link the new tunes there? Isn’t there a time limit for editing posts? Can that be removed from the first post for this purpose once the real thread is up? Or are the two separate threads better?
Maybe all that is needed is a link to our music on our profile (like you have islander). I can’t even figure out how to edit my profile to add a link to the “web address” option! Anyone know how? I just don’t see an “edit” anywhere.
In the past, pipers have simply started a new thread with a link to their sound clips, and comments could stay with the sound files like they probably should.
I believe this would be better served by a “sticky”. Otherwise the thread(s) will get buried quickly.
we never asked for that, all we wanted is a thread where we can post links of recordings (stored whereever) for a challenge of the month
again, i do hope the you guys get your “tune of the month” thread and that many will take part and have fun…
it just makes me remember how it did feel when we were told that what we want will not be allowed and that we should get our own webspace for such a thing and we did ask for the same thing as is suggested here… we didnt even ask for a sticky ![]()
hopefully moderators this time will understand that it will be just another thread and not more work for any moderator
anyway we got our own little thing … and everybody who likes to, is welcome to join, with any instrument, we are so few yet and would be happy about every one with ideas and activity (just see my signature)
