For Andrea (warning: Graphic food images!) :)

Tonight supper:
seared tuna, veggies, potatoes & mashed parsnip

I’m an evil man, I know

that tuna is barely seared.

Supposed to be that way..it’s sashimi grade

I’ll have two servings, please. Pass the wasabi and shoyu.

And show you what??

Yeah. that’s how they don’t cook it at a little place in Annapolis called the Yin Yankee Café. I like it, but mi esposo is tired of having them refuse to cook his fish. Just asking almost reduces the chef to tears.

I used to be part of a few anorexic communities for people who did not want to be healed (otherwise known as the “pro-ana” movement) and it was quite common to collect images of food and look at them instead of eating. We would get collect and share with each other pictures of food so beautiful they could hang in the Louvre. Seriously. I deleted all my computer images and threw away all my paper ones a couple years ago, though, or I’d post some of them in this thread.

I hope you are out of such a dangerous place.

I had a good friend die from anorexia, and I know it is a serious mental condition that requires treatment. My friend did not want to be cured, and his family refused to recognise their son had a mental disease. That’s why he is dead now.

I think the appearance of Pro-ana sites on the internet displays a dangerous lack of access to treatment for the disorder.

Mukade

I won’t go near raw fish. I got food poisoning from a can of mackeral once.

How can you tell if someone has an eating disorder as opposed to being genetically thin as a pencil? Especially when you know they DO indeed eat, albiet in tiny quantities.

Greg, you are EEVIIILLLL!!! You just had to do that to me, didn’t you?? A whole thread just to tempt my tastebuds… I don’t know what to say…

Was there dessert???

I didn’t make dessert, but we did have some Ben & Jerry’s Uncanny Cashew ice cream.

It isn’t so much about being stick thin and only eating small quantities of food. If they won’t eat in front of other people, if it seems like the act of eating makes them sad or fearful, if they take little bites and do a whole lot of pushing their food around on their plates, if you live with them yet never actually see them eat, if they spend an inordinate amount of time in front of the mirror and/or weighing themselves-- then an eating disorder may be going on. Any one of those things by themselves may not be an indicator, but when they start adding up, and continually going on, I would be concerned. By the time the person really starts looking thin and wan, it will have been going on for some time.

And keep in mind, a person with a disorder gets really good at fooling people…it can go on for some time before anyone even notices. And the sad thing is, people are so paranoid about being wrong about their concerns and upsetting the person, that it can be even longer before anyone tries to help.

Yum! That sounds like a perfect closer. Now if I could just figure out how to clone you and keep the culinary skills in tact.

We always ate things well-cooked. Maybe it’s a regional thing. If I wanted my carrots and onions crunchy I’d eat them raw. I don’t like stuff only partway cooked. Yes… I ate around a lot of stuff when I lived in the Orient.

I am out and on the road to recovery (although my diagnoses is/was EDNOS, not Anorexia Nervosa). Thanks.

oh the eating disorder subject - for many, EATING is not the problem. The problem comes along AFTER they have eaten. Depending on if they are anorexic or bulemic - keeping the food down, feeling ok about themselves after they have eaten, etc. is where problems come in.

My son’s girlfriend has ben anorexic in the past, and still has some major problems with food. When she’s at the house, I offer her dinner if we’re eating, but never push the issue. If she does request something specific, even in passing “a salad really sounds good right now” - we’ll do our best to accomidate that, without making a big deal of it - “hey Madison, want to try some of this new dressing recipe I found?”.

It’s not about food, it’s about control. It just happens that food is one area that most of us can have some control over in our lives.

Missy

Exactly.

On a more positive note… Greg, what’s for dinner tonight??

My name’s not Greg but for me it’s rotini salad and Freedom bread.
