not a great picture, but this was Tom’s once upon a time:
(it was originally orange, but after a massive wreck, he had it painted black)

Does he still have it?
nah - he got rid of it when his first girl was born!
It was a 124 Spyder. He was driving it late on a country road one night, came around a curve (probably going a tad bit fast!) and came across a massive Cadillac stalled and blocking the entire road. He hit it head on, and bounced the Fiat over 200 feet into a field off the side of the road. He broke the steering wheel (it was wood) and his head hit the windshield with enough force to split his entire nose open (didn’t break the windshield). Luckily, that was all the injuries he suffered.
The repair shop said they had never put so much force on a car to straighten it before. While it was getting fixed, he also redid the engine, and wound up having to get fuel at the airport after that (needed the higher octane!).
Good greif, I’ll bet it cooked after the rebuild!
A buddy of mine had one like the spyder in this picture, is this like his?

Oh, funny.

Oh yeah! The Imp is hillarious!
Funny little care rule!
I’ve always wanted one of these sexy beasts. Aston Martin Lagonda

Yeah, Any Aston is great, but I think those look awesome!

Now, there’s a real car. ![]()

Why dont you just take your car and your Star Trek vixen and go back to Vulcan! ![]()

That’s a hellova riksha!
In 1964 I was a struggling 2nd year college student going to school during the day and working in a factory molding shop from 4 to midnight. I had scrimped and saved my meger pay and was set to buy a new VW Beetle. It was to be my first new car. Up to then I had been driving $100 “junkers” kept alive with bubble gum, bailing wire and spit.
I went down to the VW dealership ready to buy and was horrified to find that the price of a new beetle had just increased from $1995 to $2095. A month eariler, I had had a conversation with the typically slick salesman who had assured me of the lower price. Needless to say, the dealership was now unwilling to stand by their lower price and basically told me it was going cost a $100 bucks more.
I was so incensed by their attitude that I left the dealership, went down the street and bought one of these;

That’s a Fiat 1100D folks, in all it’s 1100cc and 55hp glory. What a collosial mistake I made! This was the worst piece of automotive crap in the universe. It began shedding parts before it had 10,000 miles on it. In fact , one cool morning I pulled out the manual choke, heard a faint but funny noise and proceeded to try to start it. It turned over just fine but would not fire. I opened the hood to discover the entire carburator dangling from the throttle and choke cables. Seems the base of the carb had broken completely off. The damn thing was made out of the most absurdly thin zinc “potmetal”. In fact, the entire car was just very badly made. In just over three years of ownership, it was a hopeless heap of junk. Fiat retired from the US marketplace shortly thereafter and has never returned.
I laugh about it now but, it sure was a pain at the time. Shoudda paid the extra 100 buck and got the VW.
Fiat has never really been known for “quality.” I dont speak Italian yet, but Fiat just might mean ‘poop.’ (in fact, you ever see the original “Italian Job?” How d’ya think those Minis were able to outrun those cops? They were driving Fiats!
)
I have a friend with a Fiat spider…talk about a money pit…but he wised up and dropped a little more money on beefing up the engine bay and dropping in a small Japanese engine. It’s not quite the stinker it used to be.
Ah yes, the Fiat Spider. A friend of mine bought a very nice looking used screaming yellow one some years after I had my experience with Fiat. I tried to talk him out of it but he had already fallen for it’s sexy looks. Needless to say it was an automotive romance from hell. He loved her but, she done him wrong, over and over. ![]()
Once you get to a certain point with those things you think that nothing else can go wrong with them…
Like I said, ‘Fiat’ just might be the Italian word for poop…
My friend has to replace pody parts every now and again still, even though everything mechanical is japanese, including the suspension, it just keeps falling apart! He’s got this thing for Fiats though…even had himself one of those golly-awful looking 500s for a while that he was able to shoe-horn a VW rabbit engine into(not a great improvement, but hey!).
Why is it called the “Mayomobile”? ![]()
You’ve never been to County Mayo over in the West of Ireland then?
