Folk Woodwind Instruments on Early Weavers/ Seeger Cuts?

While driving this evening I heard on a local NPR station (WKDU, Fordham) a small part of a retrospective on The Weavers & Pete Seeger. I heard a few cuts from very early fifties–prior to Vanguard recordings, perhaps. In any event, two of the cuts featured a fine sounding simple wind instrument, such as the fabled Orcan flute or maybe an ocarina. To further complicate matters, I think a heard a reference to an instrument called a ‘halil’ or ‘khalil.’ It was a fine sound, not to mention that Mr. Seeger’s voice was amazing.

Can anyone suggest a way to find out the identity of that instrument?

Thanks,

Tom D.

I know only that Pete S. played a tenor recorder
in their recorded concert in Carnegie Hall. Best
