Hi folks. I had a couple of flute lessons with Brendan Dolan last month and found him to be an awesome teacher. He came to Birmingham AL (an hour and a half drive from my home), touring with All Ireland fiddler Brian Conway. Brendan did a flute workshop prior to the concert; I thought the workshop was so good I came to Brooklyn three weeks later to get another lesson (it helped that I was there for Thanksgiving with the family)! Many of you may know Brendan as a very talented multi-instrumentalist playing piano and whistle as well as flute. His dad Felix, is a well known Itrad piano player. Brendan has taught at the East Durham Irish Arts Week, in addition to playing with several Itrad groups. Lots more to the bio if you Google it.
I’m a self taught intermediate flute player and, to my knowledge, the only Itrad flute player within an hour’s drive. Needless to say, it’s nice to get in a lesson wherever I can. These were no dissapointment and I highly recommend Brendan to anyone needing a flute/whistle teacher in the Brooklyn, NY area. Hardly. There are many Irtrad flute players around, some great players right there in Bklyn, many, many in the city (you know THE city), a few in Queens, the Bronx – well, those other donkeys, um, boroughs, all within an hour’s drive of Bklyn. I don’t get out as often as I used to, myself, but I can think of many other players I’ve run into of advanced caliber in town, and out.
But, as for Brendan Dolan (and his dad), you’re quite right there – great to know he teaches. We Manhattanites, though – rarely leave the city.. I used to, to study with Jack Coen in the Bronx (probably is an hour from Brooklyn, but we don’t drive here, either, so I don’t know. The train and bus to the Bronx hinterlands took me about thirty minutes from Manhattan).

First, I was kidding. Boroughs/burros – get it? Not calling the people who live in these areas anything of any sort. Lighten up. I’ve played sessions and gigs in all five boros (hmm.. no, not Staten Island…), but generally, Manhattanites don’t go into the boros much, and many of the others don’t come in much, either… Personally, after twenty odd years or so, I’ve had it with the whole big apple, and would opt for a rural life in the country in a heartbeat.
But that’s me.
