Flute Swab

I have one of these that came with the flute. I really like this swab. Are they still in business? Just checking. I sent email with question and will see that way. Just wanted to see if anyone on the forum has ordered one lately? I think that the web site is the only source of them.

Thanks.

Sorry, came with which flute?

Actually, I think the swab was added. The flute is a Christman antique 4 key. So, it wasn’t part of the original flute  .

Sorry if I misled. I really like the swab. I got the flute from my teacher who said that it came with it. I did google and got the url that I put in. It is in canada.

Thanks.

Got it!

I’ve had a few of these - and wanted to order one for my new silver flute.

I emailed the lady in November, but haven’t received a reply - in the past, she’s replied very readily.

I emailed about 3 days ago and still haven’t heard from her. I may get my sister to make one. She is quite a good seamstress and has made me flute bags that are quite nice.

This is nothing new. Any music supply store should have swabs with a pull strip and a weighted end to drop it through the flute. The only difference I see with this is that the weighted end is long enough to push the cloth through the head. Boehm flutes come with a metal rod with an end you can thread a cloth through. I have several of these, but I use a small wooden dowl instead because I think it does a better job of drying the head.

Having tried several, this approach works best for me: http://www.mcgee-flutes.com/rod.html
This type of cleaning rod can be used in the manner of the swab discussed above.

You can also do this http://www.shakuhachi.com/U-Tsuyutoshi.html. I’ve done this with shakuhachi. I have made the cleaning rod as mentioned to use to swab the head joint.

This is the really cheap way. Guess that is what I will do when the one that I have currently wears out.

Still no email from the request. My guess is that the lady making them is no longer making them.

What I see that is different about this swab is that it is asymmetrical. If you look at http://www.doctorsprod.com you will find a silk swab that works great and I think looks similar.

For them that might be interested, I contacted Beth at Dalhousie, and got the following response, which she asked me to pass along…

Dear Edward,
Thank you for your inquiry.
Yes, I have been remiss about answering emails sent to me via my
“fluteswab.com” website, but many people manage to reach me anyway. I
just checked the website for the first time in months and found some
emails that precede that time frame, which puzzles me as well. In
other words, I question how well the site is functioning.
Finally, though my energies are diversified in the winter (E.g. I am
an active instructor of flute in the Halifax, N.S., area), I am still
producing and selling Flute Swabs for the entire flute family. I sell
via email and through Flute World and Carolyn Nussbaum Music. I also
plan to be selling at the National Flute Association Convention in Las
Vegas this August.
Perhaps you could let other people know that I am alive and well,
still making and selling Flute Swabs, and that if they wish to contact
me, they could also correspond via <edubois@dal.ca>.
Thank you so much for your inquiry and please don’t hesitate to
contact me again. Sincerely, Beth McCarthy

The rest is silence.
Best - Ed

Thank you Ed. I was able to order from the ones below. I had seen one on one of the sites below. I thought it was the same. It is.

FYI, both sites below are US based companies.

Again Thanks Ed.
