I want to recommend flute flags, which are devices
for swabbing flutes. These are safe, efficient,
easy, and enable you to swab a flute while
it’s assembled, including in the middle
of a gig. If intererested, do
a google/yahoo search on ‘Flute Flags.’
There’s a new one specially made for
conical flutes. Best
I love flute flags! They’re great for keeping your flute from becoming water-logged, and I love not having to take the flute apart to clean it.

I like your avatar!
Thanks, I thought it was time for a change. (The Little Mermaid is one of my favorite movies of all time).

How would these work/compare to gun bore type swabs?
Dana,
Your new avatar is nice (for whatever that’s worth from an avatar-less poster), but I really liked your original picture. I hope it makes a comeback sometime.
To return to topic, I think the difference between the “flute flags” being spoken of and the swabs for gun barrels is that the flags have a string with a little weight on one end that drops through the tube and allows the cloth at the other end to be pulled through. I believe these are commonly used for brass and woodwind instruments.

Actually, the flute flags are made of a plastic rod in two sections, with an absorbent swab incorporated into the top. They’re great for really getting a headjoint dry, especially around the stopper area.
Re: the old avatar. I loved that picture too! I got a kick out of people asking if it was me: I have a daughter about the age of that cute little girl. Perhaps I’ll go back to it sometime. I sorta liked people thinking that I’m around 12 years old.
