Flat set regulator tuning for chanter second octave pressure

Hi y’all,

I’m just starting off learning the regulators on my flat set in B. I’ve had Bruce Childress build me a new set of reeds for all three regs, and so far, I’ve had pretty good results tuning them up, with just a little blu-tack required on the tuning pins.

However, I’m running into some trouble with several notes on all three regs going too sharp with the slight additional pressure required for the chanter in the second octave. At this point, I’m not sure how best to proceed with adjustments, as I said, everything seems pretty stable at the pressure required for the first octave.

Since I’m quite happy with the volume, tuning, and playability of the chanter currently, so I’d rather not have to mess with the chanter reed to reduce the playing pressure to get the regs to play in tune in the second octave, but perhaps that might be the solution.

I’d very much appreciate any suggestions. I’m really not sure how to proceed at this point.

I think you’re on to the right thing by concentrating on the chanter reed, and easing the pressure needed for the 2nd octave. B sets should be super easy to get into the 2nd octave. If all 3 regs reeds are going sharp, that’s another indicator to look at the chanter reed.

Now you know why the correct name for them is “aggrivators”. :angry:

I have played this chanter and it’s set up ultra light. I would suggest opening the reeds to get a more solid feel from the set. This will help with the varying pressure issues in a big way. It might take some time retuning by moving the reeds in or out of their seats and also rushing the regs but it will be worth it. If you want to get together to do this I am up for it.
