When ever I play relatively fast, my fingers fly all over the place - full extension. If I do this for several hours (i.e. at Contra dances) my fingers get sore.
I consciously try to make small, controlled finger movements in practice but can’t maintain small, controlled finger movements at speed.
Any suggestions?

Try practicing slowly in front of a mirror, keeping fingers close to the instrument. Very gradually (over days/weeks) increase the speed you play, but still watching in the mirror. If you see fly-away fingers, take the tempo down a notch until you have control over those fingers. Any whistle player will tell you that sometimes fingers have a mind of their own - they must be tamed!!
